The right tool catches a subscriber before they drift away, whether they chose to leave or their card failed.
Every subscriber who leaves takes recurring revenue with them, and acquisition spend has to replace it before the business can grow. Some of those subscribers chose to go. Others had a card fail and never meant to leave. The two problems need different tools, and buying the wrong one leaves the real leak open.
The best tools to reduce subscription churn fall into four groups. Billing platforms such as Stripe Billing retry failed payments and update replaced cards. Apple and Google run billing retry and grace periods for app subscriptions. Cancel flow tools such as Chargebee Growth, Churnkey and Recharge present save offers. Klaviyo and Amplitude show which customers are at risk.
Which kind of churn are you trying to fix?
Churn comes in two forms. Voluntary churn is a customer choosing to cancel. Involuntary churn is a subscription that ends because a payment failed. Apple's developer documentation describes it as users who do not intend to leave a service but whose subscription fails to renew, usually because of billing issues.
Split your cancellations into these two groups before you evaluate any software. A payment recovery tool does nothing for a customer who wants out, and a cancel flow never sees a customer whose card expired. Our guide to involuntary churn covers the payment side in depth, and how to reduce subscription churn covers the strategy behind both.
Where you bill matters just as much. If customers subscribe inside an iOS or Android app through the app stores, Apple or Google runs the billing, and the tools available to you are the ones each store provides. If you bill on the web, recovery and cancellation sit with your billing platform and whatever connects to it.
Which tools recover failed payments?
1. Stripe Billing revenue recovery
Stripe Billing includes a set of recovery features that need no code: Smart Retries, automated customer emails, automatic card updates, recovery analytics and no-code automations. Smart Retries uses AI to choose when to retry a failed payment, drawing on time-dependent signals such as the number of different devices that have presented a payment method in recent hours. You set the number of retries and a maximum window of 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 1 month or 2 months. Stripe's recommended default is 8 tries within 2 weeks.
Know the limits. Stripe cannot retry a payment when the card issuer returns a hard decline code, such as a lost or stolen card, until the customer provides a new payment method. When retries run out, you choose what happens next: cancel the subscription, mark it unpaid, leave it past due, or pause it if it is eligible.
Automatic card updates handle the other common failure, a replaced card. Stripe works with card networks to update saved card details when a customer receives a new card, for example after an expiry or a lost card. Stripe says this is widely supported in the United States, where it can update most American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards issued there. International support varies by country.
If you bill on a different platform, check for the same building blocks: configurable retries, failed payment and expiring card emails, and network card updating.
Which tools reduce churn on App Store and Google Play subscriptions?
2. Apple App Store billing retry and Billing Grace Period
When an App Store renewal fails because of a billing problem, the subscription enters a billing retry state, and the App Store attempts to collect payment for up to 60 days. Turning on Billing Grace Period in App Store Connect keeps the subscriber's paid access active while Apple keeps trying. You can choose 3, 16 or 28 days. Weekly subscriptions are capped at 6 days, so the grace period never runs longer than the subscription itself.
The setting trades a little revenue for continuity. If Apple recovers the payment inside the grace period, neither the subscriber's days of paid service nor your revenue is interrupted. If recovery comes after the grace period but within the 60 day retry window, the subscription renews on the recovery date, and Apple does not collect payment for the service provided during the grace period.
3. Apple Retention Messaging API
Apple's Retention Messaging API lets you choose the message a subscriber sees after tapping Cancel Subscription on a subscription details page. There are four message types: text, text with an image, a switch-plan suggestion, and a promotional offer to continue at a discounted price. Default messages can only be text, with or without an image. Offers and plan switches require the real-time flow, in which the App Store server calls yours and you pick the message.
Two limits apply. The API is a pre-release, and Apple asks developers to request access. Messages are only visible on devices running iOS 15.1 or later, iPadOS 15.1 or later, visionOS 1 or later, or macOS 14 or later.
4. Google Play grace period, account hold and pause
Google Play enables grace period and account hold by default for auto-renewing base plans. During a grace period the subscriber keeps access, and Play prompts them to fix their payment method. Account hold follows, and Google says you should block access during it. By default, its length is 60 days minus any grace period. You can shorten or disable both in Play Console, but Google warns that shorter periods may reduce the number of subscriptions recovered.
Pause is also on by default. Users on weekly plans can pause for 1 to 4 weeks, and users on monthly or longer plans for 1 to 3 months. Google notes that these lengths are subject to change.
On September 29, 2026, Google described a set of newer Play subscription features. They include retention offers, which present developer-funded incentives such as a discount inside the Play Store cancellation flow, a plan change option for users who are not eligible for a discount, and grace periods that Play tailors to each subscriber with machine learning and heuristic models. Google says many of these features are available or rolling out through its Early Access Program, so confirm which ones your account can use.
Which tools save customers at the moment they cancel?
A cancel flow asks why the customer is leaving and answers with an option matched to that reason. These three tools cover different web billing setups.
5. Chargebee Growth
Chargebee Retention is now part of Chargebee Growth. It shows targeted offers on the cancel page: a coupon-based discount, a temporary pause that resumes automatically, or a downgrade to a cheaper plan. Offers can be tied to the reason a subscriber gives in the exit survey. When a subscriber accepts, Growth applies the change through Chargebee Billing automatically. Chargebee's documentation recommends comparing each offer against a holdout that sees no offer, to confirm the offer works. Subscribers need a payment method on file, or the change cannot complete.
6. Churnkey
Churnkey covers cancel flows, failed payment recovery and reactivations. Its documentation lists feature support for Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle and Braintree. Discounts, pauses and plan changes work with all four. Trial extensions work with Stripe, Chargebee and Paddle. Payment recovery and reactivation campaigns are listed for Stripe only, so check the support table against your billing provider before you commit.
7. Recharge Cancellation Prevention
For brands running subscriptions on Shopify through Recharge, Cancellation Prevention builds automated cancellation flows that collect a reason and respond with an incentive. Options include a one-time percentage discount on the next order, skipping the next order, delaying it by days, weeks or months, swapping to another product, adding a free gift, or contacting support. Recharge also provides A/B test templates, so you can run two flows side by side and see which offers keep customers subscribed.
Which tools flag churn risk before a customer cancels?
8. Klaviyo predictive analytics
Klaviyo estimates each customer's churn risk from the number and frequency of their orders and shows it as a percentage on the customer's profile. The probability falls each time the customer orders and rises as time passes between orders. That makes it a usable trigger for win-back messages on replenishment products and ecommerce subscriptions.
The feature has thresholds. Klaviyo shows predictive analytics only when at least 500 customers have placed an order, you have at least 180 days of order history and orders within the last 30 days, some customers have placed 3 or more orders, and you have an ecommerce integration or send placed orders through the API. Because the score is built on orders, it tracks buying behavior only.
9. Amplitude Retention Analysis
For app and software subscriptions, usage is the signal billing data does not capture. Amplitude's Retention Analysis chart shows how often users return to your product after taking a specific action. You choose a starting event and up to two return events. Comparing users who completed a key action with users who did not can show which early behaviors go with staying, and gives your cancel flow and lifecycle messages something specific to address.
How do you choose the right churn reduction tool?
- Size each kind of churn first. Tag a recent stretch of cancellations as voluntary or payment-related and start with the larger group. Treat the split as approximate, since some customers whose card fails were already planning to leave.
- Match the tool to where you bill. Store-billed app subscriptions depend on what Apple and Google offer. Web-billed subscriptions need recovery features in your billing platform and a cancel flow that integrates with it.
- Measure saves against a holdout. A subscriber who accepts an offer and cancels a month later only delayed the loss. Compare retained revenue over several billing cycles between customers who saw the offer and a group who did not. Smaller subscriber bases need longer tests to reach a readable result.
- Price offers on contribution margin. A discount that saves a customer at a loss is churn you paid for.
An illustration, with made-up numbers: a $40 monthly plan carries $24 of contribution margin. A 50% discount for three months drops that to $4 a month, so each subscriber on the offer contributes $12 over those three months instead of $72. If your holdout shows that a third of the subscribers who took the offer would have stayed anyway, you gave up $60 of margin on each of them. The offer only pays if the subscribers it truly saved stay long enough afterward to cover that cost.
Churn also sets how much a new subscriber is worth, and so how much you can afford to pay to acquire one. Exactius has acquired 12M+ members and customers over 10 years in business, and retention is the input that decides whether acquisition spend pays back. Our guide to optimizing LTV:CAC for subscription growth shows how the two connect.
What rules apply to cancellation flows in 2026?
Save offers sit inside a regulated step. On July 8, 2025, the Eighth Circuit vacated the FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel amendments to its Negative Option Rule. The FTC restarted the process with an advance notice of proposed rulemaking published in the Federal Register on March 13, 2026, with comments due April 13, 2026.
State laws still apply. California's AB 2863 applies to contracts entered into, amended or extended on or after July 1, 2025. Its legislative digest says cancellation must be available in the same medium the consumer used, and that offering a discount is not an obstruction as long as the consumer remains able to cancel. Design every save offer so the customer can still finish cancelling in the same flow, and have counsel review it. This section is general information and should not be read as legal advice.

FAQ
Frequently asked
What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary churn?
Voluntary churn happens when a subscriber decides to cancel. Involuntary churn happens when a subscription ends because a payment fails, for example after a card expires or is declined. They need different tools. Payment retries, card updating and grace periods address involuntary churn. Cancel flows, save offers and churn risk scoring address voluntary churn.
How long does Apple retry a failed subscription payment?
Up to 60 days. A renewal that fails for a billing reason enters a billing retry state, and the App Store attempts to collect payment during that window. When a subscriber updates their payment information, the App Store immediately attempts to renew. Apps on iOS and macOS can deep link subscribers to the Manage Payments page at https://apps.apple.com/account/billing so they can fix the problem faster.
Can Stripe retry every failed card payment?
No. Stripe does not retry when no payment method is available, when the issuer returns a hard decline code, when the card is India-issued, or when a Connect account has been disconnected. Hard decline codes include lost_card, stolen_card, incorrect_number, authentication_required and transaction_not_allowed. For those failures, the scheduled retries only execute after the customer provides a new payment method.
Can failed bank debit payments be retried automatically?
On Stripe, yes, but it is off by default. You turn on retries for local payment methods separately, and they apply only to insufficient funds failures. ACH Direct Debit allows up to 2 retries within 40 days. SEPA Direct Debit and Bacs Direct Debit allow up to 2 retries within 30 days. Stripe notes that a payment can still fail with retries enabled.
What is the difference between grace period and account hold on Google Play?
During a grace period the subscriber keeps access while Play prompts them to fix their payment method. During account hold, which follows the grace period, you should block access. Recovery also works differently. A subscription recovered during a grace period keeps its original renewal date. A subscription recovered from account hold gets a new renewal date. By default, account hold lasts 60 days minus any grace period.
Are cancellation save offers legal?
Generally yes, when the customer can still cancel easily. California's AB 2863, which applies to contracts entered into, amended or extended on or after July 1, 2025, treats a discount offer as acceptable as long as the consumer remains able to cancel, and requires cancellation in the same medium the consumer used. The FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel amendments were vacated in July 2025, and the FTC reopened rulemaking in March 2026. Have counsel review your flow.
